First Broad-bodied Chaser Drops In.

The settled period of very warm and sunny weather continued today and a first Broad-bodied Chaser appeared in the garden. The immature male was in pristine condition and obviously had not long emerged. He took the time to finish his meal and then moved on.

Large Red's Back on Station.

Today saw the first adult male Large Red Damselfly of the year at the garden pond.It was not too long before another male joined it and they both vied for the best place to await the appeearance of breeding females. They did not have to wait long as two copulating pairs were soon recorded.

More Large Red's.

Temperatures today plummeted due to a strong easterly wind. However it did not stop the continued emergence of Large Red Damselflies in my garden.Again it was not from the garden pond,as far as I could tell, but from the garden trug that saw two emergents yesterday. At least five damselflies appeared from this small 'pond',one female and four males.

Garden Trug Produces First Large Reds of the Season.

I have been checking the garden pond for sometime now, awaiting the first Large Red Damselfly. However this morning it was a small garden trug containing surplus pond plants that produced the first damselflies. Two  emergents, one male and one female made their way up at he same time into the bright sunshine.
This 18"diameter trug is one of several container ponds in the garden and a couple of them have produced damselflies and a darter in the last year.
